Hong Kong: Victoria Peak Night View

Victoria Harbour and the Hong Kong skyline at night from Victoria Peak.
Looking down from Victoria Peak, the lights along Victoria Harbour stretched into the low clouds.

Following on from my last post about a 2004 business trip to Hong Kong, when I shot some night scenes at the Star Ferry Pier. In 2005 I was back in Hong Kong for a meeting, and this time I wasted no time—I dropped my bags at the hotel and headed straight up to Victoria Peak to make up for what I'd missed before...

At the top, I stepped out of the tram station and followed the crowd; it was easy to find the best spot for shooting the night view....

That's because plenty of professional photographers had long since set up their DSLRs on tripods, claiming the prime angles, ready to take photos of tourists for a fee...

Even beside the angles already claimed by professional photographers, there was still room to catch the harbour lights.

Still, you could find a few leftover angles along the edges of the pros' turf...just enough to snap a few keepsake shots~~~

Low clouds pressed over the hills, giving the Hong Kong night view even more layers.

Walking along the road that circles the peak, just about all the best spots are in the first stretch; the farther in you go, the darker and more out-of-the-way it gets...and the angles aren't as good as up front, so after a while it's about time to head back~~~

Before walking farther along the peak road, I took one more shot of the Victoria Harbour night view.

Afterword:

As for techniques for shooting Hong Kong's night views, a kind member on Mobile01 generously shared his personal tricks in a post, "How to Photograph the Victoria Harbour Night View", full of genuinely sharp insights—well worth a careful read...

One member replied, "It seems shooting the Victoria Harbour night view really comes down to the weather first...all that aperture-priority, shutter-priority stuff is useless"...and that's spot on. Actually it's not just Victoria Harbour...Victoria Peak is even more so...apparently it's often wrapped in cloud and mist on ordinary days...the weather held up reasonably well today, so I count myself pretty lucky~

Next time I come to Hong Kong to shoot the night view...who knows when I'll get the chance again~~
