One day in Venice, Italy (2000.11.26)

For some reason, I kept hearing classmates, colleagues, and friends talking about going to Italy for their honeymoons.

What is going on? Does it not count as a honeymoon anymore unless you go to Europe?!

One night, after watching the kids finish their homework and finally sending them to bed, I turned on the TV for a break. BS Japan happened to be showing a program about Venice. As I watched, it slowly pulled out a memory that had been sealed away for years .'"

So, here is a Venice travel note.

Water Bus and the Grand Canal

Look, a young man in his prime.

And yes, my hair had glorious days too ^.^

The Grand Canal on a cloudy day
The weather was not kind that day, so Venice was half hidden in mist.

The Grand Canal is the most important canal in Venice and part of the city's main water transport network. Water taxis and water buses serve as public transportation, while many visitors also choose gondolas.

Venice street scene
Do not ask me where this was. It was a sealed memory, how could I remember everything? >.<'"

Bridge of Sighs and Piazza San Marco

Bridge of Sighs in Venice
The famous Bridge of Sighs.

This one I remembered clearly: the famous Bridge of Sighs.

The bridge connects the interrogation rooms of the Doge's Palace with the old prison. Prisoners crossing it were often seeing Venice for the last time before execution. The name came from the sigh they were imagined to make while looking out over the city.

Piazza San Marco and St. Mark's Basilica
Piazza San Marco, with St. Mark's Basilica ahead and the Doge's Palace beside it.

After the bridge, the walk opened up into Piazza San Marco.

It was early winter, and not the lively Carnival season, so many shops around the square were closed .'"

Ahem...

Do not let the bad weather in my old photos make you think Venice was not much to look at.

Here are a few screenshots from the Venice episode of World Water Journey, the program that brought these memories back.

Did you like it?!

Next time, I will tell you why honeymoons must go to Europe...
